The objects of the Society of Glass Technology are to encourage and advance the study of the history, art, science, design, manufacture, after treatment, distribution and end use of glass of any and every kind. These aims are furthered by meetings, publications, the maintenance of a library and the promotion of association with other interested persons and organisations 


Membership is open to individuals, companies, associations or institutions.

The Society of Glass Technology is a non-profit making organisation serving a worldwide membership. We publish journals and text books; organise meetings and conferences on glass related topics; coordinate the activities of special interest groups and technical committees; and provide a communication framework geared to the needs of the glass community.

So how do you benefit by becoming a Member?

Anyone can attend our meetings and conference but members get this at a discounted rate, the discount normally covers the price of membership. For example Furnace solutions and  the Training day costs non members £240 for both and  members pay £120. The three day annual meeting typically costs £325 and for members it is £265.


Discounted publications. Most of our books are at least £10 cheaper for members.

Technical Committees – You can participate in one of our own Technical Committees. 


Library -The society’s library collection is available to all members.

Journals - Within the membership fee the Personal Member you will receive one of the two highly respected journals published by the Society, or both at a small premium.
Our two bimonthly journals are: 
European Journal of Glass Science and Technology Part A: Glass Technology - covering glass making, glass fabrication, properties and applications of glasses or glass ceramics and other related topics. In addition to refereed papers, Glass Technology contains SGT and industry news together with conference proceedings and review papers.
European Journal of Glass Science and Technology Part B: Physics and Chemistry of Glasses - the leading international, peer-reviewed publication for research scientists in the fields of glass structure and properties. 


Certified Reference Materials – We offer you at a discount our range of standard glass, sand, limestone and dolomite Certified Reference Materials for analysis and calibration. These can be bought at our online store

Personal Members are part of an international network of specialists in their particular field of glass. This wide network operates through personal contact, meetings, workshops and publications. New graduates are introduced to this network and to one another through specialist seminars.

Fellowship Recognition is given to individual achievement. Fellowship of the Society is awarded to members who have reached prescribed levels of attainment in the business of glass and associated industries and for recognised contributions to the science and technology of glass. Fellows are entitled to use the designatory letters ‘FSGT’.Members can apply to become a Fellow by completing the application form here.

In the United Kingdom the Society supports the continued personal development of members in other professional bodies.

Corporate Members The objectives of the Society bring direct benefits to industry and institutions associated with glassmaking. A corporate member nominates representatives of its company to benefit from the privileges enjoyed by a Personal Member.
